On the other hand, if you look at mages, only the school associated with the spell (Warfare for Necromancy) will increase the damage of that spell. The case is similar for all the physical damage dealers, basically any physical skill you increase will increase your weapon damage in some way.

If you're playing an archer, your points in Ranged and Warfare will increase your damage, if you put any points in Scoundrel you'll increase your critical hit damage and Huntsman will increase your high ground bonus. Part of the reason that physical is better because of skill synergy.
