Upset by Savage's stern brand of leadership, all of the 918th's pilots apply for transfers. Major Joe Cobb (John Kellogg), one of Savage's squadron commanders, takes Gately's place as Air Exec. Whenever any man in the 918th fails to measure up, Savage transfers him to Gately's plane.

Gately tries to challenge Savage, but the general calls him a coward for avoiding combat missions and demotes him to command of a B-17 named the 'Leper Colony', manned by the least competent airmen in the group. Savage is particularly hard on Colonel Ben Gately (Hugh Marlowe), the Group Air Executive Officer, placing him under arrest for being Absent Without Leave (AWOL). At one point, he closes down the officers club bar as punishment. He deals with everyone so harshly that the men begin to detest him. Savage finds his new command in disarray and begins to address the discipline problems. Brigadier General Frank Savage (Gregory Peck) is his replacement. General Patrick Pritchard (Millard Mitchell), commanding general of the VIII Bomber Command, Eighth Air Force, recognizes that Davenport himself is the problem and after a disastrous mission in which half the Group's bombers were shot down, relieves him of command. Overall, it’s a half-hearted effort from RGV who has previously directed horror films such as ‘Bhoot’, ‘Phoonk’ and ‘Vastu Shastra’.īarring a scene, where you see Gauri abruptly waking up in the middle of the night and in the subsequent part where she turns her neck, the rest of it just fails to send shivers down your spine. Eventually, the latter part keeps you hooked especially when the new characters-Mithun Chakraborty as a psychiatrist, Debholay, and Manav Kaul as encounter specialist, Francis Desouza-are introduced.

In the first half one gets bored trying to figure out what is wrong with the lead character. With reasonably good actors and a story that had the material to turn into something remarkable, director-writer Ram Gopal Varma presents a half-baked broth of some under-developed characters and the not-so-convincing subplots (for instance, the equation between Gauri and her boyfriend, and that of Francis (Manav Kaul) and his wife (Flora Saini) – is confusing). Are these symptoms of pre-exam stress? Or there is something else that is bothering this little girl forms the crux of the story.
